Are you ready to relax the distress The Embodied Practice Training Course Online Embodied Practices Course starts October 4, 2013 You’ve heard people for years talk about the benefits of yoga, meditation, of prayer yet somehow that peace and quiet has seemed to have eluded you. You might have tried a practice of one sort or another, diligently practicing it for a day or two but then found the momentum drain away. The goal of the Embodied Practices Course is to help you remember your true nature so that when the difficult moments come—and they always do—you have built a stronger, inner container to hold it. In the Internal Family Systems model we call it Self Energy, our capacity to hold the qualities of calmness, curiosity, clarity, compassion, confidence, creativity, courage, and connectedness. Most people want those qualities in their lives, want to live from that space. It takes practice, and good therapy helps. What to do then for those many hours between therapy sessions? How do you keep cultivating the space you find while in your therapist’s office? You might have tried a practice of one sort or another, diligently trying it for a day or two but then finding the momentum drain away.
You want the ease that you know is there but can’t seem to find it. Knowing it’s there but elusive to you compounds the feeling of being stuck in a body that is always activated, disrupted, panicked or despairing. It’s sad for me to watch you and so many others in that situation. When people don’t feel safe to be in their bodies I realize we all lose the chance to be gifted by your full presence. The gifts you have waiting in your heart to be unfolded don’t get a chance to flourish. I want to support you in creating an inner world which allows you to flourish
It dawned on me that I’m always urging you to practice (‘course I’m doing the same to myself!) People ask me for tips for help, for suggestions. With that prompting I put together the Embodied Practices Course a couple years ago to help people stick the course in practice. This time I’m stretching that time from five weeks to ten weeks with a focus on using yoga and meditation to help with trauma symptoms that you can take on a practice for an extended time. Each week has practices to support you in being your body, with yourself. Yet, this isn’t a “Magical Cure” Unfortunately, after years of looking for that elusive Magical Cure myself (and spending many, many tens of thousands of dollars in the process L) I realized there is no quick and magic way to internal peace and quiet. What there is, however, is steady, consistent practice which yields exactly what you want: a peaceful mind, a body at ease, and a heart that feels safe. In the Embodied Practices Course you’ll get practical, simple skills over ten weeks that you can practice, opening up the path to become more embodied. You’ll gain confidence that your body is a safe, nourishing place to live.
We need to utilize all approaches as we heal. Most psychotherapy tends to focus on the “excavation” part of healing, going into the past, retrieving stuck/block memories and bringing them into awareness. The Embodied Practices, as well as the Becoming Safely Embodied and Attachment skills, are oriented toward supporting your being to relax, soften, open, and remember your own true nature. Often we need to balance the deep excavation that happens in good psychotherapy with remembering kindness, goodness, compassion — all the qualities of our true nature. Do you want to flourish and remember how to live from your true nature? If so, the Embodied Practices Course might be the support you are looking for. What we’ve found is that cultivating an inner landscape of kindness and compassion makes it easier to deal with the dark and painful moments in healing. Is this what your heart and your body are longing for? Every week I am in many, many conversations with people who feel lonely, sad, stuck inside their pain. They fear there is no way out, that things will never change. It breaks my heart. I remember what it was like to feel that way and to doubt that there is a way though. I have “cellular memories” of giving up hope, of despairing. Not only is it possible but it is absolutely possible, one step at a time, as you practice over and over and over again.
The Embodied Practices are designed to give you:
They were designed with you in mind These practices are designed for people with trauma and attachment complications. Here’s what one woman wrote on the Safely Embodied blog after watching the short video on Decreasing Reactivity.
Using the principles and practices of yoga and meditation we’ll explore topics important to you If you decide to join us in the Embodied Practices Course my primary focus will be on helping you take the practices into your daily life to get the results that are possible. Here’s what you’ll be learning in these ten practical sessions: Session 1: Belonging to the world and setting intentions
Objective: You are not alone. This is a path into a more loving, kind, safe world. You belong. There is room for you. There are others who have walked this path and carved out the undergrowth leaving signposts along the way.
Session 2: Gaining entry to a safe and secure body
Objective: Introduce you to how different body time is (slower, quieter, softer) versus trying to arm wrestle our internal world into submission when it is being flooded or shut down.
Session 3: Riding the wave of sensations and developing equanimity
Objective: No matter how skilled we are at being in our bodies there is always a threshold we cross when we touch the next layer of neurobiological distress. We need to learn to become “first responders” moving toward the distress with a soft heart instead of running away and erecting more complicated defenses. In order to do this, though, we need to have a map that describes the territory so that it feels safe enough to “be with” whatever is there. Session 4: Befriending triggers and eruptions
Objective: Everyone with a trauma and attachment history is subject to horrifying reactive moments catapulting us into shame and humiliation. These moments become chronic as we replay them ad infinitum in our own minds spinning us further into stuck spaces. Neuroscience teaches us that “neurons that fire together, wire together.” Healing requires us to learn bare noticing to untangle the instantaneous web of distress that we are catapulted into. Doing so we become more resilient falling less frequently into the pits of despair. Session 5: The antidote to shame
Objective: A horrible by product of trauma and attachment wounding is the crushing experience of shame. Climbing out of this cycle of shame allows for greater freedom and self-confidence. This session is on learning to be soft in the face of shame, humiliation with compassion and loving kindness.
Session 6: Working with parts holding dissociation, hopelessness, helplessness
Objective of the most psychologically disoriented experiences is when you feel split off, confused by the many different internal voices. This session we’ll work on creating some healing and space for the different parts held in your mind, body, and hearts.
Session 7: Boundaries—knowing where you begin and end
Objective: Instead of having a diffuse experience or a completely shut down, over-boundaried life, this session will orient you to the felt experience of being in your body, being present, connected to yourself, separate from others when you need to be, close to them, connected to them when that feels right. We’ll cover the variety of boundaries, physical, intrapsychic, and interpersonal. Session 8: Unwinding from fear
Objective: In attachment theory we explore how fearful attachment corrodes, invades with a seemingly uninterruptable terror that when unchecked can permeate our bodies, minds, hearts, and spirits making it more difficult to life a satisfying and nourishing life.
Session 9: Learning to trust again
Objective: We all make mistakes. We all do things wrong. If you lived in a family or environment where you were made wrong, judged, humiliated then it became impossible to trust others; the internal humiliation had to be avoided at all costs. Any spiritual and psychological path has at its goal to free ourselves from this kind of tyranny. In a world in which “Mistakes arise as wisdom” you experience more freedom to make mistakes knowing they are mechanisms to get clearer and find your way home to yourself.
Session 10: Weaving a life good enough in which to fully live
Objective: Living with a fear of the future and how we’ll never get where we want to go can cripple anyone with a trauma and attachment history. These deep underlying beliefs operate on a subterranean level to keep us living the same way. To pull these beliefs out by the roots we need to reimagine a future in which goodness awaits us. Perhaps this truly is the promise as we integrate spirituality and psychotherapy: a better life awaits you.
Plus a 173 page Embodied Practices Guide which is downloadable and professionally designed And of course, there’s support During the live courses I check in with people to see how their practice is progressing and to ask any questions that have come up. Those answers have been compiled into the professional designed pdf guide that goes with the course. I appreciate the insight and great care with which you respond. I appreciate being “gotten” in this way as so much of the burden of the depression and dark parts is feeling so isolated with it. I offer you these Embodied Practices from my heart When anyone feels unsafe in their body and in their life – we all lose the chance to receive the gift of their full presence. Are the audios delivered through the mail? I investigated giving you both downloadable and physical versions of the program but found that the postal price would increase the cost substantially.
How basic is this? Is this a repetition of other things I’ve done? These are simple practices although not exactly basic. These are practices I still do in my daily life, especially when I’m under any kind of stress. I find when things get complicated I need simple steps, simple ways to come back to balance. Although many of us have had spiritual practices for many years, it’s applying practices to the trials and difficulties of our daily life that’s important. These practices were developed in the cauldron of doing just that. What happens if I’m going to be away when the material arrives? The emails will be there for you when you get back, waiting for you! I designed this especially to be self-paced with the intention of providing motivation, inspiration, and encouragement.
I looked forward to the information each week. The reading material helped but it was the day to day practice that made all the difference. I appreciated the written material you gave us, helping to prepare the inner soil, letting us know expectations, that therapy might be helpful, that this is a psycho-educational course, and how to dedicate our time for practice. All well thought out and helpful. ~ Carrie, Boston, MA Results Over 100 people have taken the course with very positive results.
